We have designed a cute LEGO model of the ELT, including the telescope, the dome enclosure, and the instrument METIS! You can build it yourself with the part list and building instructions below.

METIS

METIS is one of the first- generation instruments of ESO‘s 39-m Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). It offers imaging, coronagraphic and spectroscopic observational modes that will cover the infrared wavelength range (3-13 μm) to study a wide range of astronomical targets in unprecedented detail; from objects in our Solar System and exoplanets to distant active galaxies.  The METIS consortium consists of ten European astronomy institutes and ESO, plus one US and one Taiwan-based institute, and is led by NOVA (the Netherlands). METIS passed its Final Design review earlier this year.

The LEGO model part list and building instructions you can find here. We have also a miniELT.xml file which you can use to order yourself all pieces at once at https://www.bricklink.com/. Create a free an account, go to https://www.bricklink.com/v2/wanted/upload.page and click on the tab “Upload BrickLink XML format”. Copy-past the contents of the miniELT.xml file. You can now select this shopping list, and optimize the brick purchase at https://www.bricklink.com/v2/wanted/buy.page. You can easily edit your “wanted list” at https://www.bricklink.com/v2/wanted/list.page, and multiply by the number of as many sets as you want to buy.

Have fun! (Design courtesy Frans Snik).
